The 4th Meeting of the International Science Steering Committee (hereinafter referred to as ISSC-4) and the International Typhoon Academic Forum were held in Shanghai on 29–30 January 2026. Hosted by the Asia-Pacific Typhoon Collaborative Research Center (hereinafter referred to as AP-TCRC), the hybrid event brought together representatives from the World Meteorological Organization, the Typhoon Committee and member countries including China, the United States, Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia and Pakistan.

At 20:00 on 29 January, ISSC-4 opened in Shanghai. Mr. FENG Lei, Director-General of the Shanghai Meteorological Service and Vice-President of the AP-TCRC Council, delivered the opening remarks on behalf of the Council. He expressed gratitude for the Committee’s guidance over the past year and highlighted AP-TCRC’s major achievements in 2025: the successful EXOTICCA 2025 international seminar, dual-aircraft observation campaign with the Hong Kong Observatory, official release of the Global Tropical Cyclone Data Center, and leadership in drafting the Typhoon Committee Strategic Plan 2027-2031. He also noted that the Shanghai International Typhoon Collaborative Research Fund has supported 12 scholars from eight countries and expressed hope that continued guidance from the ISSC will further deepen joint research on typhoon science across the Asia-Pacific and provide more “Shanghai experience” for global disaster risk reduction.
The Committee then reviewed and discussed four documents: the2025 Progress of AP-TCRC, the Action items in response to comments from ISSC members, the Introduction of the 2026 International Tropical Cyclone Collaborative Research Guide and the 2026 Annual Work Plan of AP-TCRC.
On 30 January, the International Typhoon Academic Forum took place at the AP-TCRC conference room in Lingang. Five invited lectures were presented, during which participants exchanged views on AI nowcasting errors, pre-disaster risk assessment for coastal megacities, rapid intensification dynamics and loss estimation under climate change.
In the closing remarks, Dr. TANG Jie, Director of AP-TCRC, thanked all delegates and stated that the Center will continue to strengthen cooperation with WMO, the Typhoon Committee and other international partners, striving to translate typhoon research achievements into operational early warnings and disaster governance and to contribute China’s solutions to typhoon resilience in the Asia-Pacific region.
